U.S. U-20 MNT Draws Guatemala 1-1 in Opening Match of 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship

KINGSTON, Jamaica (Jan. 9, 2015) – The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team was stunned by a 90th-minute equalizer from Andy Ruiz that handed Guatemala a 1-1 draw with the USA in the teams’ opening match of the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship at Independence Park on Friday evening.

Tottenham center back Cameron Carter-Vickers’ first goal for the U.S. Under-20s in the 58th minute highlighted a dominant display from the USA, which was unlucky not to pierce the Guatemalan defense on more than one occasion.

The USA pushed forward early, winning a handful of free kicks and corners with attacks down the flanks through Tommy Thompson and Romain Gall. Thompson nearly gave the U.S. an early lead with a hard shot from a tight angle that was saved by Guatemala goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen.

The U.S. dominated the run of play throughout the first half, even when playing with 10 men after defender Matt Miazga was sidelined for an extended period to close a gash over his right eye suffered in an aerial challenge with a Guatemalan forward.  Despite its dominance of possession, the U.S. wasn’t able to craft many quality scoring chances aside from Thompson’s until late in the first 45 minutes when Vickers nearly turned home a Paul Arriola cross at the back post and Gall volleyed a Shaq Moore feed just wide of the Guatemala net.

The second half saw more of the same from the U.S. Under-20s. Fulham midfielder Emerson Hyndman barley missed on a long range effort that had Hagen beaten and Sunderland forward Lynden Gooch saw a partially blocked shot scooped up as well by the Guatemalan ‘keeper.

The USA next plays Panama, which beat Aruba 4-0 in the day’s opening match, on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on FOX Sports 2 and fans can also follow all the action on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt and @ussoccer_esp

Goal Scoring Rundown:
USA – Cameron Carter-Vickers (Emerson Hyndman), 58th minute: Defender Shaq Moore’s powerful run to the end line won the U.S. a corner that second-half sub Emerson Hyndman curled to the back post. Carter-Vickers leapt above the fray to loft a well-place header back across the face of goal and into the right-hand side netting. USA 1, GUA 0

GUA – Andy Ruiz, 90th minute: A final Guatemala surge down the right led to a corner kick that was initially cleared by the USA’s Kellyn Acosta. But, before the ball hit the turf, Ruiz volleyed it from 25 yards away from goal into the left-hand upper 90 of U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen’s net. USA 1, GUA 1 (FINAL)

Key Saves and Defensive Stops:
GUA – Nicholas Hagen, 12th minute: The USA won a turnover in midfield and Junior Flores sent the ball wide left to John Requejo, who whipped in a cross that Tommy Thompson did well to bring down to his feet before blasting a wide-angled shot from close range right at Guatemala goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen. Thompson had another crack when the rebound came to him but was unable to keep his second effort on frame.

GUA – Nicholas Hagen, 31st minute: The U.S. sent a long ball forward out of the back for Jamieson to chase. As he neared the ball and the edge of the Guatemala box in a one-v-one race with a defender, Hagen charged off his line to claim the rolling ball at the top of the box just before Jamieson could get a touch.

GUA – Nicholas Hagen, 78th minute: The U.S. broke through the Guatemala midfield and worked the ball onto the foot of Lynden Gooch at the top center of the box, where he was able to get off a partially deflected shot. Despite leaning the opposite way, Hagen was able to recover and collected the arcing deflection.

Additional Notes:

  • The U.S. is 7-2-2 all-time against Guatemala in CONCACAF U-20 qualifying.
  • U.S. U-20 head coach Tab Ramos sent out a starting defense of Zack Steffen in goal, John Requejo at left back, Matt Miazga and Cameron Carter-Vickers in the center and Shaq Moore at right back.
  • Kellyn Acosta captained the USA from midfield where Paul Arriola and Junior Flores, who departed at halftime for Emerson Hyndman were also stationed.
  • Up top, Bradford Jamieson IV occupied the center with Tommy Thompson split off to his right and Romain Gall to his left.
  • Lynden Gooch eventually replaced Jamieson midway through the second half and Russell Canouse came on for Gall in the 84th minute.

U-20 MNT head coach TAB RAMOS

Thoughts on the match:
"We knew it was going to be a very difficult match. Having said that, I'm a little disappointed. We obviously came out for the three points and unfortunately we couldn't get it."

On the team's performance:
"I thought our midfield played well. I thought our defense in particular did really well - our center backs, both Cam (Carter-Vickers) and Matt (Miazga), and then obviously our outside backs, both Shaq Moore on the right side and Johnny Requejo on the left played very well. They got forward a lot, created plenty of opportunities.

"I thought in general, we didn't make the final pass, our final pass was not a good one. And the guys up top were not as sharp as I'd like to see them."

On what happened for Guatemala's late goal:
"Obviously there was barely any time left. We tried to bring everybody back into the box. The ball got cleared out. There was no one with the man, and the Guatemalan player hit a great shot. You have to give him credit - that was an incredible goal."

On whether the draw could be a set back for the team mentally:
"I don't think it will be one, mentally, because if anything it will make us come out on Sunday a little bit stronger for the next game. It's definitely a learning experience. At the end of the day, we have young players, but they're learning with every international match. And I think this is certainly a good learning experience for us."

On the intensity and level of play in the match:
"We thought Guatemala would come out to play a little more in the first half. Guatemala played their game. They have to play according to the players they have. We thought the game would be a little more back and forth, which would have benefitted us. But [it was] more or less what we expected. We expected to dominate the game and win, but we didn't win.”

U.S. U-20 MNT forward TOMMY THOMPSON

Thoughts on the match:
"I thought attacking-wise, we did pretty well. I think we could have created a few more chances, but I think we kept the ball on their half the vast majority of the game. We were unfortunate at the end, but we can't look back. We have to focus on Panama now.

"I think we were all pretty disappointed in the locker room after that game, but now that it's over, it's over. We have to focus and do everything we can to make it right in the next game."

U.S. U-20 MNT defender CAMERON CARTER-VICKERS

Thoughts on the match:
"I think we dominated for the majority of the match. I think we created a lot of opportunities, we kept the ball well, and I think we defended well also. Obviously, it's disappointing not to get a win. We definitely had more opportunities than they did, but when someone scores a goal as they did, it's hard to stop that."

On scoring his first international goal:
"I don't really score much for my club side, so to score at the international level I was very happy, very pleased. Emerson was taking it, and before the match, actually, I said to Emerson ‘I think I'm going to score.’ He just crossed it in and I just saw it and attacked the ball.”

On why he thought he might score:
"The Guatemala team, as we saw on the clips, they weren't very big. So I had a little feeling."
