Bobby Wood got things off to a great start for MNT players at their clubs this weekend, scoring two goals inside the first 13 minutes in Union Berlin’s 4-0 victory at Paderborn on Friday (WATCH). In the seventh minute, Wood went on a charging run through midfield before splitting the Paderborn backline to unleash a low blast inside the left corner. Six minutes later, Wood got on the end of a long ball over the top and muscled off a defender as he finished from the top of the 18.
With the brace, the MNT striker took his tally to 16 on the season to set a new record for Americans in Germany’s top two leagues, previously held by Conor Casey who had 14 during the 2003-04 season at Karlsruher.
Since returning from the Bundesliga’s winter break, Wood has nine goals in seven appearances and remains in contention for the Second Bundesliga’s Golden Boot, sitting just three back of VfL Bochum’s Simon Terrode at 19.
Elsewhere in Germany, 17-year-old Christian Pulisic made his second start of the season, playing 73 minutes in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-2 draw at Schalke. Timmy Chandler made his third straight start for Eintracht Frankfurt in their 2-0 loss to Hoffenheim, while Fabian Johnson went 78 minutes in Borussia Monchengladbach’s 2-0 defeat to Ingolstadt. In the Second Bundesliga, Andrew Wooten played 90 minutes in Sandhausen’s 4-1 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld.
In England, U-23 midfielder Emerson Hyndman played the hero for Fulham, scoring a stoppage time winner in the club’s 2-1 defeat of Cardiff City on Saturday (WATCH). While it was the first goal of Hyndman’s professional career, it was made even more special by the fact that it came on his 20th birthday.
Around England, Brad Guzan played another full 90 minutes as Aston Villa fell 2-1 to Bournemouth. DeAndre Yedlin went the distance in Sunderland’s 2-0 loss to league-leaders Leicester City. Geoff Cameron lined up as a defensive midfielder in Stoke City’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool, while Matt Miazga played 45 minutes in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss at Swansea. In the Championship, Danny Williams went 90 in Reading’s 2-0 loss vs. Birmingham City.
In Mexico, Omar Gonzalez put in a complete match for Pachuca as they took down CONCACAF Champions League finalist Tigres UANL 2-1 on Saturday night, keeping los Tuzos within five points of league-leading Monterrey. William Yarbrough backstopped Club Leon to a 2-1 win against Pumas UNAM on Sunday, while Joe Corona came on at halftime of Dorados Sinaloa’s 3-0 victory against Cruz Azul.
Stateside, Chris Wondolowski found his fourth goal in five matches in the 55th minute of the San Jose Earthquakes’ 2-2 draw with FC Dallas. With the goal, Wondolowski remains tied atop the MLS Golden Boot race and pulls to within one of Ante Razov for fourth on the league’s all-time goals list.
