From veterans of the league to newcomers looking to make an impression, the MNT will have several contributors as the 2016 Liga MX Clausura kicks off tonight. The new campaign features U.S. Men’s National Team defenders Ventura Alvarado, Greg Garza, Omar Gonzalez and Michael Orozco, and midfielder Miguel Ibarra.
Gonzalez is set to make his Liga MX debut with CF Pachuca at 10:30 p.m. ET on Azteca America tonight. With three MLS Cup titles to his credit, the 2011 MLS Defender of the Year moved south of the border to Pachuca in December. His squad lines up against Club Tijuana, where Orozco is available for the Xolos after joining the club last summer. Garza is expected to miss at least another month due to injury after recently returning from loan at Atlas.
On Saturday, Alvarado and Club América will kickoff their campaign against Puebla (6 p.m. ET, Univision). Along with winning the CONCACAF Champions League and playing in the FIFA Club World Cup, the U.S. defender made 13 appearances in 2015 during his inaugural year for the MNT. The Liga MX nightcap will see Ibarra begin his second season with Club León as they face Santos Laguna (9 p.m. ET, NBC Universo).
