SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (March 30, 2015) – The U.S. Beach Soccer National Team scored a goal in the last 10 seconds of regulation to top Barbados 4-3 in its second group match of the 2015 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship at Estadio de Fútbol de Playa Costa del Sol in San Salvador, El Salvador.
An intense matchup of back-and-forth between the two nations resulted in a scoreless first period that saw excellent defensive performances from both teams, especially Barbados goalkeeper Romayne Primus who blocked every strike sent his way.
In the second period, Lewie Valentine directed a throw-in from the left sideline to the far post where U.S. captain Nick Perera was able to bring down the ball, control it and send it in with the inside of his right foot into the right corner of the net in the 14th minute. Primus was able to get a touch on the ball but was unable to make the save.
The USA had two other good opportunities in the period when U.S. goalkeeper Aldo Balsano sent a shot from his own net directly to the other side, but Primus stepped up to the task again and jumped high to punch it over the crossbar. In the dwindling seconds of the second period, Jason Santos also had a clear shot at a goal but his attempt hit the right post.
The final 12 minutes were non-stop as six goals were scored in that span. Barbados struck first, finding the equalizer in the 26th minute with a shot from its captain, Tito Beckles, from 12 yards out that went into the left upper corner of the net. A minute later, Perera put the U.S. on top again with a perfectly placed bicycle-kick goal that he sent to the upper right corner for the 2-1 lead. Jason Leopoldo extended the U.S. lead with a shot from the left side inside the far post in the 27th.
The lead didn’t last long as Barbados’ Jamar Grazette notched the first of his brace in the 30th minute to keep his team alive. He tied it all up again with about 54 seconds to go. Perera however completed his hat trick in dramatic fashion, clinching the game-winner for the USA with under 10 seconds left in the game.
