LA MANGA, Spain (March 5, 2015) – Midfielder Mallory Pugh scored twice as the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated its counterparts from Norway, 2-0, in the first of three friendly matches at the 10 Nations Tournament.
Pugh, who was a starter for the USA at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, opened the scoring five minutes before halftime as she latched onto a free ball that bounced off the Norway goalkeeper to score her third international goal at the U-20 level.
The USA held the 1-0 lead until two minutes were left in regulation. Pugh rushed to challenge a back pass and stripped a Norway defender about 30 yards from the goal. She beat one defender on the dribble and when the goalkeeper came out to challenge, she slipped her shot low and hard into the corner to provide the final margin.
The victory gave U.S. Women’s Soccer a three-game sweep of Norway over the past six days as the U-23 WNT defeated the Norwegians 2-0 on Feb. 28 in La Manga and the senior sides squared off on March 4 at the Algarve Cup in Portugal with the USA winning, 2-1.
This was the first international match for this age group in the new cycle as they focus on qualifying for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which has an age cut-off of players born on or after Jan. 1, 1996.
The roster features three players who were a part of the USA’s 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Team in Pugh, defender Kaleigh Riehl and midfielder Taylor Racioppi.
The USA will next face the Netherlands (March 7) and Sweden (March 9) at this U-19 invitational event. The tournament also features Switzerland, Germany, England, Italy, Denmark and Scotland. As the U.S. players are in the first year of a two-year cycle, and all were born in 1996, 1997 or 1998, they are technically still U-19s.
U.S. head coach Michelle French called up 11 players currently in college, while 11 still play club.
