LAKEWOOD RANCH, Florida (Dec. 1, 2014) – The Academy Select Red Team (1998-99) defeated the Academy Select Blue Team (1998-99) 2-1 during the 2014 Development Academy Select Game at the Premier Sports Campus.
A game-winning goal in the 78th minute by forward Chaz Burnett (Players Development Academy) boosted the Select Red Team to victory, after a goal from Select Blue defender Sean O’Hearn (PA Classics) in the 50th minute had tied the score.
The Academy Select Game serves as a platform for Academy players who have been hand-picked by U.S. Soccer Technical Advisors and Youth National Team staff to show their skills and get the opportunity to be noticed by the scouting network in a competitive environment, with the potential opportunity to further their play in the Youth National Team system and beyond. The game consisted of two 40-minute halves.
The first half opened up with both teams trading passes and keeping much of the game in the midfield. However, in the 19th minute, Select Blue forward Brandon Purdue (Richmond United) produced the first real threat of the game.
Purdue’s shot appeared to be headed to the left side of the net, but Select Red starting goalkeeper Andrew Panneberg (Charlotte Soccer Academy) was just able to get his fingertips on the ball and deviate it out of bounds to keep the match scoreless.
The Select Red Team gave itself a really good chance to take the lead before the half as midfielder Giuseppe Barone (Crew Soccer Academy Wolves) weaved through several defenders on the left side of the box and directed a crafty pass to Burnett whose shot went wide left.
The second half was a different story as both teams came out at full speed and without wanting to waste any more time. The first goal of the game came on the 43rd minute courtesy of defender Matthew Constant (Dallas Texans) who took a pass from Barone and knocked it in to give the Select Red Team the 1-0 lead.
Not wishing to lag behind, the Select Blue Team took advantage of a driven free kick from midfielder Matias Barraza (Weston FC) as he found O’Hearn at close range for the header toward the inside of the left post to even the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute.
With only a couple of minutes left in the game, Burnett broke the stalemate and gave the Select Red Team the win with a shot down the middle that was sent his way once again by Barone, who assisted on both goals for the Red Team.
