LA Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes set a new precedent for homegrown goal scoring. Zardes, who represented the Galaxy during the 2008-09 Academy season, scored his 13th and 14th goals in Major League Soccer play this season, setting a homegrown record.
Zardes scored in first-half stoppage time and then in the 75th minute as the Galaxy posted a 6-0 rout over the Colorado Rapids this past Friday.
The previous homegrown record of 13 goals was set by New England Revolution Academy product Diego Fagundez last season.
Galaxy Academy product Jack McBean of LA Galaxy II was recently named USL PRO Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season. McBean scored two goals during Galaxy II’s 2-1 road victory against Sacramento Republic FC.
Hamid Earns Eighth Shutout: D.C. United Academy alum Bill Hamid notched his eighth shutout of the season during a scoreless draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday. The eight clean sheets tie his career-high set in 2012. He now has 87 saves this season, which is one save away from his career-best of 88 in 2012.
Fagundez, Wenger Tally Fifth Goals of Season: New England Revolution Academy product Diego Fagundez scored his fifth goal of the season as the Revs rallied for a 2-1 victory against the Chicago Fire on Sunday. New England earned its fourth straight victory. Also in Eastern Conference play, PA Classics alum Andrew Wenger notched his fifth goal of 2014 during the Philadelphia Union’s 2-0 win against Toronto FC.
Last week, Crossfire Premier alum Kelyn Rowe assisted what proved to be the game-winning goal by Lee Nguyen during New England's 3-1 victory against Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 3. Also in that match, Vardar SC product Soony Saad of Sporting Kansas City scored the game’s first goal in the ninth minute.
