MEXICO CITY (Aug. 4, 2014) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team scored two first-half goals and beat Paraguay 2-1 in a match to decide Group C at the 2014 Copa Mexico de Naciones. With the win, the U.S. swept the group to finish with nine points and punch its ticket to a quarterfinal matchup with Colombia on Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Haji Wright scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 23rd minute to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead, finishing an assist from Luca de la Torre. Christian Pulisic extended the lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute on a Josh Perez assist. Pulisic scored in all three group matches, netting a hat trick against China PR in the opener and one each against Mexico 2 and Paraguay. Wright and Pulisic led the U.S. to the highest scoring output of any team in the group stage with a combined 10 goals.
Having clinched a spot in the quarterfinals already, the U.S. needed a win or a tie against Paraguay to take the top spot in Group C. Paraguay ended up in second place in the group with four points and will play Group D winner Portugal on Wednesday. Mexico 2 placed third with three points and China PR took fourth with one point.
The U.S. now faces Colombia in Wednesday’s quarterfinal matchup. Colombia finished second in Group D with a 2-1-0 record. Colombia lost only to Group D winner Portugal. The quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals on Friday, Aug. 8.
