LA Galaxy homegrown product Gyasi Zardes scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute as the Galaxy defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 on Saturday.
Zardes’ shot came from just beyond the penalty mark after Robby Keane’s cross was tapped back to Zardes by Marcelo Sarvas, who was credited with the assist on the goal.
Zardes has appeared in 11 games and started five for the Galaxy this season, recording three goals and an assist in his second season with the club. He needs just one more goal to equal his total from the 2013 season, when he scored four goals in 27 appearances.
Powers Scores Again: Dillon Powers scored his third goal in five matches to lead the Colorado Rapids to a 2-0 victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, ending Vancouver’s eight-game unbeaten streak. The Andromeda FC alum tallied the first goal of the match when he picked up a deflected pass on the right side of the box, spun to his left and shot left-footed across the goal and just inside the left upright.
Kovar Makes MLS Debut: Aaron Kovar, a homegrown player for Seattle Sounders FC, made his MLS debut Saturday against the D.C. United. Kovar subbed on in the 72nd minute of the Sounders’ 1-0 victory.
Elsewhere, former PA Classics player Andrew Wenger recorded an assist for the Philadelphia Union in a 3-1 victory against the New England Revolution. New England’s Kelyn Rowe, formerly of Crossfire Premier, assisted a Saer Sene goal in the 73rd minute.
