NEW YORK (September 1, 2010) – The USA Bid Committee today announced American Airlines as an official partner of the organization’s efforts to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to the United States in 2018 or 2022.
“American Airlines is certainly one of the most recognized symbols of our country’s outstanding transportation infrastructure,” said Sunil Gulati, Chairman of the USA Bid Committee and President of U.S. Soccer. “The partnership with the USA Bid Committee is yet another example of their deep commitment to the sport that started with their backing of the 1994 World Cup. We are thankful for their continued support of our cause.”
American Airlines was the official airline of the 1994 FIFA World Cup held in the United States and currently serves and the official airline of Major League Soccer as well as several professional soccer clubs. The company also holds the title of the official airline of SuperLiga.
Through its sponsorship agreement with the USA Bid Committee, American Airlines will use a variety of the company’s communications channels to promote the online petition drive of the U.S. bid that has already attracted more than 990,000 supporters to www.goUSAbid.com. The agreement also allows the USA Bid Committee and American Airlines to use each other’s logos, marks and slogans, in press releases, advertising materials, and marketing materials. The American Airlines logo will be included on the Bid Committee’s website with a link to the American Airlines website, www.aa.com. Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed.

The United States and the eight competing bids submitted their official bid book to FIFA in a formal ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland on May 14, 2010. FIFA’s 24 member Executive Committee will study the bids, conduct site visits and name the hosts for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments on December 2, 2010, completing a 21-month bid and review process.
The United States, England and Russia have formally declared their desire to host the FIFA World Cup™ in 2018 or 2022. Netherlands-Belgium and Portugal-Spain have each submitted joint bids for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, while Australia, Japan, Qatar and South Korea are only candidates to host the tournament in 2022. Indonesia withdrew its bid in March 2010, while Mexico withdrew its bid in September 2009. Following the Mexico announcement, CONCACAF issued a public endorsement for the United States bid in November that pledged the full support of soccer’s governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean.
