Castrol Index: MNT Qualify for World Cup with 2-0 Win against Mexico

In the most anticipated Hexagonal match of 2013, the U.S. Men's National Team defeated Mexico 2-0 and clinched a spot in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in front of a sold-out crowd at Columbus Crew Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

For the first time in the U.S. MNT Castrol Index ratings, three USA players surpassed 1,000 points in a well-rounded effort to book a seventh straight World Cup appearance and 10th overall. The USA also set a record for victories in a calendar year with 14.

Landon Donovan garnered 1,200 points for providing the insurance goal late in the second half and assisting the USA's first goal by Eddie Johnson. Donovan topped his own USA points record with 24 this year on eight goals and eight assists. His previous mark was 22 points in 2007 (nine goals, four assists).

Johnson was second on the Castrol Index with 1,066 points. His game-winning header in the 49th minute was the 19th goal of his career and 12th tally in World Cup Qualifying.

The first half against Mexico belonged to goalkeeper Tim Howard, who came up with several clutch saves on the night en route to the 32nd clean sheet of his career, tying for second-most with Tony Meola. Howard's three-save performance earned him 1,021 points on the Castrol Index.

Also noteworthy was center back Omar Gonzalez, who had 925 points on the Castrol Index against Mexico. For the calendar year, Gonzalez is leading all USA players with an average rating of 754 points per 90 minutes.
