U.S. Men vs. Honduras

Castrol Index: Fabian Johnson, Brad Evans and Omar Gonzalez Top the Castrol Index as the U.S. Men's National Team Defeats Honduras 1-0 in Sandy, Utah

The U.S. Men’s National Team finished off their trio of World Cup Qualifiers with a 1-0 win against Honduras on Tuesday night in Sandy, Utah. The victory puts the team at 13 points, two points clear of Costa Rica at the top of the table in the Final Round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Earning the top honors from the Castrol Index following the match against Honduras is defender Fabian Johnson with 1,002 points. While filling in for DaMarcus Beasley at left back, Johnson played a big role in only allowing Honduras only one shot on target the entire 90 minutes. He also completed 82 percent of his passes, including the pass to Altidore for the game-winning goal. This is the highest score Johnson has achieved this year in the Castrol Index.

With 994 points, defender Brad Evans slots in at No. 2 on the Castrol Index. This score was based largely on his role in helping preserve the clean sheet. He also had one shot on goal, nearly finding the back of the net with a header early in the second half but the Honduras ‘keeper was in the perfect position to make the point-blank save. Evans also completed 45 of the 55 passes he attempted. This is the first time he has cracked the top three of the Castrol Index this year.

Omar Gonzalez comes in third in the Castrol Index with 969 points. Gonzalez gained points for the same, strong defensive performance as Evans and Johnson.  He completed 89 percent of his passes, and had five clearances and four ball recoveries to go along with one blocked shot. This is the fifth time Gonzalez has been in the top three of the Castrol Index this year.

Gonzalez’s strong performance extended his lead in the overall aggregate index to more than 500 points over midfielder Clint Dempsey. Dempsey, who finished the Honduras game with 903 points, regained the second overall spot from midfielder Michael Bradley, who only scored 672 against Honduras.
