U.S. Men vs. Panama

Castrol Index: Howard, Altidore and Beasley Top the Castrol Index as the U.S. Men's National Team Moves into First Place in the Hexagonal

After a 2-0 win against Panama on Tuesday night in Seattle, Wash., the U.S. Men's National Team sits in first place halfway through the Final Round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The win against Panama extended the MNT's home unbeaten streak in World Cup Qualifiers to 24 games (22-0-2).

Blowing away the competition in the Castrol Index this week was goalkeeper Tim Howard with 1,080 points. There are two big reasons why Howard earned the best score. The first was his diving save against Panama's Luis Tejada in extra time to hold on to the clean sheet, his first of 2013 and 23rd of his career. The second reason is the overall play of the defense that allowed Panama only one shot on target all game. The 1,080 points move Howard into eighth place in the overall aggregate index with 2,198 points.

Finishing second this week was forward Jozy Altidore with 845 Castrol Index points. His 36th-minute goal off a cross from midfielder Fabian Johnson was his third in three games for the MNT. He also had another on target that boosted his Index points. He earned his second straight Man of the Match honors and now sits in fourth place on the year with 2,962 Castrol Index points.

Rounding out the top three of the Castrol Index is midfielder DaMarcus Beasley with 829 points, his highest of the year. Beasley played at left back, and was a big reason why the U.S. recorded a clean sheet. He nearly scored in the 79th minute, but his shot after a 60-yard run just skimmed off the outside of the goalpost. He was the most efficient passer for the U.S., completing 83 percent of his passes.

Defender Omar Gonzalez continues to lead the overall aggregate index with 3,668 points. Midfielder Michael Bradley overtook midfielder Clint Dempsey for second place in the overall Castrol Index after earning 643 points against Panama. He is still more than 300 points behind Gonzalez.
