Charlotte Eagles (PDL) 2, Charlotte Independence (USL) 3
The Charlotte Independence proved royal in the Queen City Derby in the Second Round of the U.S. Open Cup for the second year in a row, this time with a 3-2 comeback win against the Charlotte Eagles. The victors registered the game’s first goal in the ninth minute when Casey Townsend tapped in a failed clearance. The Eagles nabbed two goals in a span of two minutes, first when Ryan Williams traveled from midfield and scored on a right-footed shot from the top of the box, and again when Kelvin Omondi cut inside across the top of the area and bent a shot inside the far post in the 63rd minute. Trailing 2-1, Independence midfielder Enzo Martinez earned a penalty, which he converted with a low shot to even the score in the 77th minute. Eleven minutes later, Martinez tallied again with a right-footed shot across the face of the goal and into the side netting. The win sets up another local rivalry clash, as Charlotte Independence go on the road to face NASL side North Carolina FC in the Third Round.
