In the first U.S. Open Cup meeting between two teams that have often met in the MLS Cup playoffs, it was the visiting Houston Dynamo that came out on the front foot at Sporting Park.

The orange-clad side controlled the play early and came close to the game’s first goal in the 26th minute when Brad Davis got free in the box on the left and sent a quick center that just missed Ricardo Clark’s sliding attempt.

The game flipped four minutes later, when Dynamo midfielder Luis Garrido went in two-footed on Sporting KC’s Amadou Dia, leaving referee Ted Unkel no decision but to show the Honduran international a straight red card.

Like the 10-man Union side earlier in the day, the visiting Dynamo found the game’s first goal. Brad Davis’ corner from the right side met Clark whose header forced a reaction stop out of Sporting ‘keeper Tim Melia, but Will Bruin was there to bury the rebound in the 59th minute.

Sporting conjured the chance to equalize two minutes later when Davis tripped up Sporting KC right back Chance Myers in the box. Dom Dwyer stepped up to take the resulting PK, but Joe Willis was equal to the spot kick in the 62nd minute.

Benny Feilhaber then made his mark on the match, first in the 69th minute when his stinging volley from the top of the box was cleared off the line by Kofi Sarkodie at the right post. Feilhaber came good two minutes later, picking up a loose ball at the top of the box, before burying it to equalize in the 71st minute.

Hoping to avoid extra time, Sporting got the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute when Krisztian Nemeth’s flick fed Dwyer in the box on the left. This time the Englishman made no mistake, burying his effort past Willis to take the score to 2-1. The strike pushed Dwyer into sole possession of the tournament’s Golden Boot lead with five goals.

Two minutes later, Nemeth put the game out of reach, receiving the ball on the left before seeing his effort deflect in off Dynamo defender A.J. Cochran into the back of the net in the 88th minute.

With the 3-1 win, Sporting KC advanced to their second U.S. Open Cup Semifinal in four years and will host Real Salt Lake on August 12 at Sporting Park.
